08/01/2002: ""don't you know you're driving your mommas and poppas insane?""

I was talking to a friend on AIM last night about feeling old on the internet. I'm only 23 but on all the websites I visit I feel distinctly ancient in comparison to the average populous. The conversation then went onto the topic of hobby choice. Anime isn't exactly a glamorous hobby for a 23 year old - it's generally associated with kids or porn, so it's not exactly good dinner table discussion material.

Host: "So, Ian, what do you do in your spare time"
Me "I make music videos"
Host: "Really? Which bands have you made music videos for?"
Me: "Well, actually I pick music and put japanese animation to them"
Host: "I see. .... .... Let me just check on that soufflé"

On the other hand, thinking about it, normal people don't have hobbies on quite the scale that I or other anime fans have. For most of the people I went to school with the nearest thing to a hobby is collecting beer mats. I really enjoy my hobby, but I can understand if ordinary folk don't quite "get it". Heh, I remember that scene in Otaku no Video when he exclaims 'Why is it if you like tennis you are normal but if you like anime you are a freak?!!?!'

I guess it's not all bad - back when I used to be a real film buff I discovered that everyone had an opinion on film which basically ended up in me lecturing them on the finer points of the psyche of the cowboy or the development of narrative... at which point they either got annoyed or nodded politely :)

Yeah, at least I dont get drunk and have arguments on why "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" is one of the best examples of neo-noir anymore... I just get (rightly) accused of being the sole UK distributor of gay cartoon porn. geh.
